Annual “Pink in the Rink” fundraiser surpasses 2009 total.

Victoria, BC – The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that they have helped raise over $28,000 to date through their “Pink in the Rink” night for the British Columbia Cancer Foundation, already surpassing last year’s total of $20,000.
On Saturday, January 16th, the Salmon Kings hosted their third annual Pink in the Rink night where the players wore special pink jerseys for the first time in club history. Several pink sweaters were auctioned off throughout the prior week and at the game to raise funds for the BC Cancer Foundation. At a live post-game auction, Neil Petruic’s jersey was sold for $500, while David Shantz’ jersey went for $825.00. Salmon Kings’ mascot Marty the Marmot also donated his jersey to the live auction and was sold for $650.00. Through online auctions, Jimmy Sharrow’s pink jersey sold for $500.00, Olivier Latendresse’s auctioned for $605.00, and Dirk Southern’s went for $456.33. This past week, Chad Painchaud and Adam Taylor had their Pink jerseys provided for silent auction, and both sold for $500! Wes Goldie and Patrick Coulombe also had their sweaters auctioned off at a silent auction during the Pink in the Rink game. Coulombe’s jersey was won for $1,400 while Goldie’s was sold in a last-minute bid-off for $1,500 to a winner whose daughter is currently battling cancer. In total to date, the Salmon Kings have raised a total of $8836.33 through pink jersey sales.
Salmon Kings’ defenseman Gary Gladue also put forth a special quilt made by his mother to be auctioned off with all proceeds to go to the BC Cancer Foundation. The Salmon Kings-themed blanket was auctioned for $350.00.
The Salmon Kings’ 50/50 and Chuck-a-Puck promotions were run by the BC Cancer Foundation which raised $4,136.88 and $3,400.00 respectively. Chuck-a-Puck winners took home a his and hers Sony MP3 Walkman, a $500 gift certificate to Hillside Centre, a special fishing charter courtesy of Island Outfitters, and a concert ticket package to the Black Eyed Peas courtesy of 107.3 KOOL FM and Accent Inns. Telus also generously donated a pink Blackberry Pearl that was awarded to one lucky fan during a second intermission shoot-to-win contest.
The BC Cancer Foundation was also on hand during Pink in the Rink to accept donations and sell special pink toques and scarves with 100% of the money raised put towards their cause. The total monetary donations towards cancer research accrued during the game totalled $328.98 while the special souvenirs sold for a total of $7,377.86.
Hillside Centre donated an additional $1,480.00 through the sale of their “Believe” merchandise which included pink lanyards, ball-caps, and t-shirts.
Up until two days prior to the Pink in the Rink event, the Salmon Kings were proud to present a special ticket discount that donated $5 from every ticket sold to their annual event to the BC Cancer Foundation. This year, the Salmon Kings donated $2,735.00 through ticket sales to the cause.
To date this season, the Salmon Kings have donated over $120,000 towards charitable causes throughout Vancouver Island and British Columbia. In their six-year history, over $1.2 million has been put back into the community by the Salmon Kings through Pink in the Rink and initiatives such as the 50/50 draw, chuck-a-puck promotions, and ticket and merchandise donations.
The Salmon Kings’ next series will be at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre as they host the Alaska Aces on Thursday, February 11th, Saturday, February 13th with puck drop for both games at 7:05. The series will then conclude on Sunday, February 14th with puck drop at 1:05 after the game on February 14th, the Salmon Kings will present their final “Skate with the Salmon Kings” for 2009-10 season.
